Abstract

The battery is an essential component in the motorcycle electrical system, and its capacity and efficiency directly affect overall vehicle maintenance. In practice, riders typically become aware of a deteriorating battery only when the engine is already difficult to start, leading to reactive and unplanned maintenance. Therefore, this study aims to develop an IoT-based monitoring system to acquire voltage, current, and starter cycle data of a LiFePO4 motorcycle battery. This study also analyzes the effect of State of Charge (SoC) variation and charging duration on starter performance and capacity degradation. Testing was conducted through repeated starter cycles with SoC variations of 100% and 80% and charging durations of 3, 5, and 7 seconds. Capacity reduction was calculated using the Coulomb Counting method. Results show that longer charging durations increased the number of starter cycles under both SoC conditions, with a maximum of 329 cycles at 100% SoC with a 7-second duration and a minimum of 167 cycles at 80% SoC with a 3-second duration. Capacity reduction ranged from 1.24% to 4.20% depending on the test configuration. The developed IoT monitoring system was proven capable of accurately recording and analyzing LiFePO4 battery starter performance as a basis for maintenance decision-making.. The data have shown that the corrosion rate and surface roughness were inversely proportional.
