Abstract

The digitalization of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is increasingly driven by the needs of micro-scale businesses—such as small grocery stalls (warung), small shops, home-based businesses, and businesses with simple transaction records—to manage transactions, products, and sales reports more efficiently through Point of Sale (POS) applications. At the micro scale, business owners typically only monitor incoming and outgoing cash flow without systematically calculating turnover, do not know their net profit, and lack structured stock and capital records. The micro scale was chosen as the focus of this study because it is characterized by relatively lower digital literacy, limited capital, the need for simpler interfaces, and a high dependence on smooth daily transactions compared to small or medium-sized businesses. However, POS applications for novice users at this scale often face interface challenges, particularly in navigation, display consistency, and information clarity. This study aims to analyze and redesign the UI/UX of the Kasir Warung POS application using the Design Thinking approach. The research data were obtained through observation of Kasir Warung features, analysis of micro-scale MSME user needs, analysis of the redesign prototype, and benchmarking against three competitor applications with similar POS service characteristics. The research stages consisted of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The findings identified six main issues: unintuitive navigation, weak visual hierarchy, confusing UI structure, limited onboarding and error handling, interfaces that are less friendly to novice users, and low design consistency. The redesign prototype applied the concept of Simple POS for Everyday Warung by improving the dashboard, cashier transaction, cart, payment, report, settings, and help screens. These findings indicate that a user-centered redesign can improve workflow clarity, transaction efficiency, and the overall quality of the user experience for micro-scale MSME users.
