Abstract

Self-adjustment is an important process for students pursuing higher education away from their hometowns as they adapt to new social and cultural environments. Differences in cultural backgrounds are presumed to be associated with variations in students' self-adjustment. This study aimed to analyze the differences in self-adjustment among first-year migrant students of the 2025 cohort at Universitas Negeri Padang based on Malay and Batak cultural backgrounds. This study employed a quantitative approach with a comparative design. The sample consisted of 180 migrant students selected using purposive sampling, including 91 students from Malay cultural backgrounds and 89 students from Batak cultural backgrounds. Data were collected using a self-adjustment scale developed based on Schneiders' theory and were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in self-adjustment between migrant students from Malay and Batak cultural backgrounds (p < .001) with a large effect size (r = 0.69). These findings indicate that the two cultural groups in the study sample differed in their levels of self-adjustment.
