Abstract

Solid waste accumulation in drainage channels has become a major environmental issue in urban areas because it reduces drainage capacity and increases the risk of flooding. Sekarbela District, Mataram City, is a coastal urban area experiencing drainage blockages caused by household waste accumulation. This study aimed to describe the condition of drainage channels, identify factors contributing to waste accumulation, and formulate community-based recommendations for improving waste and drainage management. The activity was conducted on May 26, 2026, from 08.00 to 12.00 WITA in three hamlets of Karang Pule Village, Sekarbela District, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Using a qualitative descriptive approach within a Community-Based Research (CBR) framework, data were collected through observations at five drainage sampling points and interviews with 14 participants, consisting of 10 residents and 4 key informants selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that all five drainage channels (100%) experienced waste accumulation and blockage, predominantly by plastic waste such as plastic bags, bottles, and food packaging. Water quality was characterized by turbid, dark-colored, and odorous conditions, indicating environmental degradation. Interviews revealed that inadequate waste segregation and improper disposal practices were the main causes of drainage obstruction. In conclusion, community-based waste management and regular drainage maintenance are essential to reduce environmental degradation and flood risk. These findings provide practical guidance for sustainable environmental management in Sekarbela and other urban coastal areas facing similar challenges.
