Abstract

Waste management remains a major environmental challenge in urban areas, particularly around Temporary Waste Disposal Sites (TPS). This study aimed to analyze community perceptions of waste management at the TPS in Gomong Village, Mataram City. The study was conducted on May 25, 2026, using a descriptive qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews and field observations. A total of 10 respondents living near the TPS were selected purposively. The results showed that 80% of respondents perceived the TPS as disturbing environmental comfort, 90% reported that unpleasant odors interfered with daily activities, and 70% considered waste collection services to be suboptimal. In addition, 100% agreed that the TPS requires better management, while 80% expressed willingness to participate in waste management programs if supported by clear initiatives and adequate facilities. These findings indicate that negative perceptions are primarily associated with odor pollution and inefficient waste collection. However, the high willingness to participate highlights the potential for community involvement in improving local waste management. The study concludes that enhancing waste collection services and implementing community-based programs are essential for sustainable waste management. The findings provide evidence to support local government policies that promote participatory and environmentally sustainable waste management.
