Abstract

Soil pollution is a common environmental problem in urban areas due to human activities and Soil pollution caused by the accumulation of plastic waste and household waste has become an environmental problem in the Mount Pengsong area, West Lombok Regency. Low public awareness regarding waste management and the absence of basic information on soil quality have contributed to declining environmental conditions and vegetation growth in the area. This study aimed to identify the condition of soil pollution through measurements of soil pH and moisture and to strengthen community awareness through participatory education on soil quality monitoring. The study employed a descriptive qualitative-quantitative case study approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the local manager of Mount Pengsong and direct measurements of soil pH and moisture using a Soil pH Meter at two observation sites, namely the Mount Pengsong area and the vicinity of the Kebon Kongok landfill. The results showed that soil around Mount Pengsong had a pH of 4.3 and a moisture value of 6.5, indicating acidic soil conditions, while soil around the landfill had a pH of 6.8 and a moisture value of 1, indicating very dry soil conditions. The accumulation of waste was associated with decreased soil quality, inhibited plant growth, and environmental disturbances affecting local communities. Participatory education activities improved community understanding of the relationship between waste, soil quality, and environmental sustainability. These findings indicate that simple soil measurements combined with community-based environmental education can serve as an initial strategy to increase public awareness and encourage sustainable soil management practices in the Mount Pengsong area.
