Abstract

Waste and environmental sanitation issues remain significant challenges in tourism areas, particularly in locations with high visitor activity that potentially increase waste generation and environmental pressure. This community education activity was conducted in the Gunung Pengsong tourism area, Labuapi, West Lombok, to raise public awareness regarding waste management and environmental sanitation. The activity was carried out through field observations, brief interviews with local communities, site managers, and visitors, followed by educational outreach and discussions on the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness, proper waste management, and environmental sanitation. The results showed that inorganic waste, particularly plastic waste, was the dominant type of waste found in the area and tended to increase during periods of high tourist visitation. Educational activities and interactive discussions received positive responses from participants and encouraged greater awareness of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability in tourism areas. The activity also highlighted the need for continuous collaboration among local communities, visitors, site managers, and government agencies in supporting sustainable waste management and environmental sanitation. Therefore, continuous environmental education is recommended as a supporting strategy to maintain environmental quality and ensure the sustainability of the Gunung Pengsong tourism area.
