Abstract

Traditional markets generate considerable waste that requires proper management to maintain environmental cleanliness and public health. Initial observations at Kebon Roek Market in Mataram City identified several environmental problems, including scattered waste, inadequate waste disposal facilities, poor drainage, and limited awareness among vendors of proper waste management. This community service program aimed to enhance vendors' awareness and participation in waste management to support a clean and healthy market environment. The program targeted vendors, market managers, and community members conducting activities in the market and was implemented using the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach through field observations, waste management education, socialization, interactive discussions, and practical mentoring on waste segregation. Program evaluation was conducted qualitatively through observations of participants' involvement, discussion outcomes, and changes in participants' understanding following the activities. The results showed improved understanding among participants regarding waste segregation, environmental sanitation, and the importance of maintaining market cleanliness. The activities also encouraged greater awareness and collective commitment among vendors and market managers to properly manage waste and maintain a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable market environment. These findings demonstrate that educational and participatory approaches are effective in strengthening environmental awareness and promoting sustainable waste management practices in traditional markets.

Abstract

The coastal area of Karang Panas Beach Ampenan faces the threat of environmental degradation due to low public awareness and high accumulation of plastic waste. This service activity aims to increase the cognitive knowledge and ecological awareness of the community related to independent waste management and coastal sustainability. The program was implemented using a participatory approach involving 45 residents (fishermen, traders, and local youth). The implementation methods include interactive environmental education, beach cleanup actions, and the procurement of hygiene facilities, which are evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaire instruments. The results of the activity showed a drastic increase in participants' understanding from an average score of 45.2% to 85.6%. In addition, participatory action managed to collect 125.6 kg of waste dominated by single-use plastics (62.5%), triggering a real commitment of residents to change waste disposal behavior. In conclusion, participatory-based environmental education is very effective in shaping environmentally conscious behavior in coastal communities. The sustainability of a clean coastal ecosystem requires continuous education programs, the provision of adequate waste management infrastructure, and strong synergy between communities and local governments.
