Abstract

Waste management remains one of the major environmental issues affecting environmental quality and public health. This community engagement activity aimed to improve the environmental literacy of Biology Education students through field observation-based waste management education at the Kebon Kongok Landfill, West Lombok Regency. The activity was conducted in May 2026 using observational and participatory educational approaches involving six student observers and 25 sixth-semester Biology Education students. Data were collected through direct observation, structured interviews with landfill personnel, environmental literacy questionnaires, and a one-group pretest-posttest design. The observation results showed that household waste is collected three times per week and transported daily from temporary disposal sites to the landfill using an average of three dump trucks. Waste is sorted into organic and inorganic categories, where organic waste is utilized as livestock feed and inorganic waste is distributed to recycling collectors. The educational program resulted in an increase in students’ environmental literacy scores from an average pretest score of 61.2 to a posttest score of 83.6, representing a 36.6% improvement. Increases were also observed in students’ understanding of environmental pollution impacts, awareness of waste segregation, and readiness to implement the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Furthermore, 88% of participants stated that field observation was more effective than classroom-based learning in improving their environmental understanding. These findings indicate that field-based environmental education is an effective strategy for enhancing environmental literacy, environmental awareness, and environmentally responsible behavior among university students.
