Abstract

Urban drainage management is a critical challenge in densely populated tropical cities susceptible to seasonal flooding. This community service activity aimed to (1) assess the physical condition of the drainage system, (2) identify flood-prone hotspots, (3) analyze contributing factors of flooding, and (4) deliver environmental education to residents of Kekalik Jaya Village, Sekarbela District, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara. Conducted on 25 May 2026 as part of the Environmental Knowledge course, the activity involved direct field observation, informal interviews with 15 residents, photographic documentation, and face-to-face educational sessions. Kekalik Jaya was confirmed as a flood red zone due to its low-lying, downstream position along the Ancar River, with the drainage network operating at only 40–50% capacity, over 80% of channels experiencing sedimentation, and 52 km in severe disrepair. The largest flood event (6 July 2025) inundated the area to a depth of 1.5 m, affecting 30,681 residents (7,676 families). Post-education assessment showed that 87% of interviewed residents increased their understanding of proper drainage maintenance, and 73% expressed willingness to change waste-disposal behavior. Recommendations include river normalization, drainage capacity upgrades, retention pond construction, nature-based solutions (biopore, infiltration wells), structured public education programs, early warning system updates, and spatial planning revision.
