Abstract

Background: Self-efficacy plays a crucial role in shaping students' attitudes and response speed during clinical practice in the Emergency Department (ED). Low self-efficacy can lead to suboptimal triage response-time attitudes, potentially compromising patient safety. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and triage response-time attitudes among Anesthesiology students at UNISA during clinical practice in the ED. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 62 Anesthesiology students from the class of 2023 at UNISA who were undergoing clinical practice in the ED. Data were collected using a self-efficacy questionnaire (20 items) and a response time attitude questionnaire (15 items). Data analysis employed the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents demonstrated high (54.8%) and very high (45.2%) levels of self-efficacy. Response time attitudes were predominantly in the very good (58.1%) and good (41.9%) categories. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.795; p = 0.000). Conclusion: A strong relationship exists between self-efficacy and attitudes toward triage response time among Anesthesiology students during clinical practice in the ED. Higher self-efficacy is associated with better attitudes toward triage response time.
