Abstract

Crop raiding by monkeys is one of the problems faced by corn farmers in Dusun Ngudal, Pagerukir, where agricultural land is located near forest and hilly areas. Local farmers have developed an adaptive strategy by utilizing guard dogs as part of the field-protection system. This study aims to describe the pattern of monkey attacks and analyze the use of local wisdom through guard-dog management in controlling crop raiding. This study used qualitative field research with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving corn farmers, and were analyzed inductively using the perspectives of local wisdom and traditional ecological knowledge. The findings show that monkeys can attack at uncertain times and tend to target corn more frequently than other crops. Farmers keep dogs near the fields because barking and chasing responses can alert farmers and deter monkeys from approaching. Existing evidence also indicates that barking dogs and the presence of dogs can function as non-lethal deterrents to crop-raiding primates, although their effectiveness may decline when monkeys become accustomed to them. Therefore, guard dogs are most appropriately understood as part of a combined strategy with direct human vigilance rather than as a stand-alone solution.
