Abstract

Recovery has become a central focus in contemporary mental health care. However, evidence on the meaning of recovery from the perspectives of mental health survivors remains limited in Indonesia. This study aimed to explore the meaning of recovery among mental health survivors. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Ten mental health survivors were recruited through purposive sampling from a mental health community in West Java, Indonesia. Data were collected between March and May 2025 using semi-structured discussion guides and analyzed through thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: (1) self-acceptance and confidence to move forward, (2) social support as a source of recovery strength, (3) stigma as a challenge in the recovery journey, and (4) hope for a meaningful life. Participants perceived recovery as a dynamic process involving personal growth, supportive relationships, overcoming stigma, and pursuing meaningful goals. Recovery was influenced by both individual and social factors. Self-acceptance, social support, and hope facilitated recovery, whereas stigma remained a significant barrier. Recovery extends beyond symptom reduction and involves rebuilding identity, strengthening social connections, and achieving a meaningful life. Recovery-oriented mental health nursing should promote empowerment, social support, and stigma reduction to support survivors' recovery journeys.
