Abstract

Family empowerment is an essential component of Family-Centered Nursing that enhances the family's ability to participate in patient care. However, evidence regarding its application in patients with osteomyelitis complicated by hyperglycemia remains limited because delayed wound healing requires continuous family involvement. This case report aimed to describe the implementation of Family-Centered Nursing combined with Metcovazin wound care in a family caring for a patient with chronic osteomyelitis and hyperglycemia. Nursing interventions included education on hyperglycemia, wound care demonstrations using Metcovazin ointment, dietary counseling, and environmental hygiene education. Wound progression was evaluated over seven days using the Bates–Jensen Wound Assessment Tool (BJWAT). Following the interventions, the family demonstrated improved knowledge and the ability to perform appropriate wound care, adopted dietary management, and improved environmental hygiene. Wound improvement was reflected by a reduction in the BJWAT score from 40 to 18 (55%) over seven days. In this case, the Family-Centered Nursing approach combined with Metcovazin wound care was associated with improved family participation in wound management and favorable wound healing outcomes. These findings suggest that family empowerment may support home-based wound care for patients with osteomyelitis and hyperglycemia.
