Abstract

This study examined the relationship between rehabilitation duration and self-acceptance among juvenile inmates (Andikpas) at Class II LPKA Yogyakarta. Self-acceptance is an important psychological resource for juvenile inmates as they navigate social stigma and the rehabilitation process. Using a quantitative cross-sectional correlational design, the study included 20 male juvenile inmates aged 15–18 years using a total population (census) sampling approach. Self-acceptance was measured using a modified version of the Sheerer Self-Acceptance Scale (SSA), and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, an independent-samples t test, and Spearman's rank correlation. Participants with rehabilitation durations of >12 months had significantly higher self-acceptance scores (M = 50.58) than those with rehabilitation durations of ≤12 months (M = 39.88; p < .001). Spearman's rank correlation further indicated a very strong positive association between rehabilitation duration and self-acceptance (ρ = .929, p < .001). Given the small sample and cross-sectional design, these findings should be interpreted as evidence of association rather than causation. Nevertheless, the findings highlight the potential importance of considering rehabilitation duration and adolescents' psychological needs when developing educational and psychosocial support in juvenile correctional settings.
