Abstract

This article reinterprets Mitsaqan Ghalizhan through the mubadalah perspective as an ethical foundation for parent-child spiritual development in Muslim families. Existing studies tend to locate Mitsaqan Ghalizhan primarily within the marital bond between husband and wife, leaving limited attention to children as active subjects in the family’s spiritual covenant. Using qualitative library research and an integrative literature review, this study analyzes Qur’anic concepts, Islamic family law scholarship, and mubadalah-based writings on reciprocal relations. The findings show that Mitsaqan Ghalizhan should not be detached from its original meaning as a solemn marital covenant; rather, it may be ethically extended to the parent-child relationship, as offspring, education, and intergenerational responsibility are inseparable from family formation. Through mubadalah, spiritual development is understood not as a one-way process from parents to children, but as a reciprocal and collaborative project. This study identifies three dimensions of reciprocal spiritual development: normative-theological, pedagogical, and relational. These dimensions are operationalized into four indicators: shared spiritual practices, religious role modeling, spiritual dialogue, and collective moral responsibility. The article presents a conceptual framework to strengthen Muslim family spirituality beyond marital reciprocity.
