Abstract

The use of expressive speech acts by teachers during the learning process sometimes gets a positive response from students. However, sometimes it also gets a negative response because teachers do not always use appropriate speech and speaking strategies to students during the learning process. This study aims to describe the forms of expressive speech acts and speaking strategies of Indonesian language teachers in learning news texts in class VII of SMP Negeri 7 Padang. The data in this study include words, phrases, and sentences containing expressive speech acts and speaking strategies derived from teacher speech. Data were obtained through the technique of listening to free conversation involvement (SBLC), recording, and taking notes with the main instrument being the researcher herself. The results of the study showed that there were 102 expressive speech acts used by teachers, namely speech acts of saying thank you, speech acts of criticizing, speech acts of complaining, speech acts of praising, speech acts of sarcasm, speech acts of blaming, and speech acts of apologizing. In addition, the speech strategies used by teachers, namely the strategy of speaking without formalities, speech strategies with positive politeness politeness, speech strategies with negative politeness politeness, and vague speech strategies.
