Abstract

This research is motivated by the suboptimal Indonesian language learning outcomes of elementary school students. Based on various previous studies, these learning outcomes are influenced by the classroom learning process, including motivation, methods, and learning models. In this context, reading engagement is considered one of the factors in the learning process. This study aims to see the relationship between reading engagement and Indonesian language learning outcomes of fourth-grade students at public elementary schools in Beji District. This study used a quantitative correlational design with a sample of 53 fourth-grade students selected from the study population. Data on reading engagement were obtained through a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability on students outside the study sample. Data on Indonesian language learning outcomes were obtained from school documentation, specifically frequent quiziz Indonesian language test scores. Furthermore, both datasets were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test in SPSS version 24. The correlation test showed a very weak, insignificant positive relationship between reading engagement and Indonesian language learning outcomes (r = 0.099, p > 0.05). This result is show that reading engagement did not have a strong contribution to student learning outcomes in this study.
