Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of language shift in the Buol language among the younger generation living away from their hometown in Gorontalo City, the factors causing this language shift, and the younger generation’s attitudes toward the use of the Buol language. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a sociolinguistic analysis. The research data consists of spoken utterances from the young generation from Buol, obtained through observation, listening, interviews, note-taking, and recording. The data sources come from the young Buol generation living in Gorontalo City. The results show that the use of the Buol language has shifted in the domains of family, education, organizations, social interactions, and work. Young people predominantly use Indonesian mixed with the Gorontalo dialect rather than the Buol language in daily communication. Factors contributing to this language shift include the social environment, education, employment, and the dominance of the majority language. Nevertheless, some young people still hold a positive attitude toward the Buol language as a symbol of local cultural identity.
