Abstract

This study aims to discuss the effect of using Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based modules on students’ learning outcomes in Social Studies. HOTS-based modules are teaching materials designed to help students not only memorize learning content, but also analyze, evaluate, and develop ideas based on the problems being studied. In Social Studies learning, HOTS-based modules are relevant because Social Studies materials are closely related to social, economic, cultural, historical, and environmental aspects of society. This study uses a literature review method by examining books and national journal articles published in the last six years related to HOTS-based modules, Social Studies learning, and learning outcomes. The results show that HOTS-based modules can have a positive effect on students’ Social Studies learning outcomes because they encourage students to think critically, understand problems, connect concepts with real-life situations, and develop solutions based on reasoning. In addition, HOTS-based modules can improve students’ learning independence, classroom engagement, and the quality of the learning process. Therefore, HOTS-based modules can be an effective alternative teaching material to improve students’ learning outcomes in Social Studies.
