Abstract

This study examines the Nganting Manuk ceremony of the Karo ethnic community in Sinembah Tanjung Muda Hilir District through the framework of Alessandro Duranti's linguistic anthropology. The Nganting Manuk ceremony is one of the traditional stages of Karo marriage that contains customary speech, cultural symbols, and kinship systems reflecting social values. This study aims to describe performance, indexicality, and participation in the Nganting Manuk ceremony. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, documentation, and transcription of customary speech. The results show that performance is evident in customary speeches delivered during deliberations and the submission of ceremonial objects as forms of prayer, hope, respect, and acceptance. Indexicality is found in customary symbols such as kampil, manuk raja mulia, manuk sangkep, cimpa entebu, rires, lau pola, and uis gara, each carrying specific cultural meanings. Participation is reflected through the involvement of kalimbubu, senina, and anak beru who perform roles according to the Rakut Sitelu system. Thus, performance, indexicality, and participation are interrelated in forming cultural meaning and strengthening kinship bonds in the Nganting Manuk ceremony.
