Abstract

This study examines the mispronunciation of Arabic loanwords by Indonesian speakers from the perspective of Indonesian phonological rules. The research employed a qualitative approach using a content analysis method. The data sources consisted of spoken utterances containing Arabic loanwords in Indonesian. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques. The findings indicate that the mispronunciation of Arabic loanwords in Indonesian is influenced by various linguistic and social factors. Linguistically, these errors arise from differences between the phonological systems of Arabic and Indonesian. Socially, the errors are affected by speakers’ habits, social environments, and levels of language awareness. Thus, the mispronunciation of Arabic loanwords in Indonesian results from the interaction of linguistic and social factors, including Arabic language interference, limited understanding of Indonesian phonological rules, language habits within the community, and the influence of local languages. The observed errors generally take the form of hypercorrection, sound substitution, sound addition, and sound deletion, indicating that speakers have not yet fully internalized the standard pronunciation norms of Indonesian.
