Abstract

Disaster preparedness is a critical capability that every individual must possess, particularly students living in disaster-prone areas like Padang Panjang City, which is highly vulnerable to floods and landslides. Conventional geography learning methods are considered suboptimal in fostering students' preparedness because they tend to encourage rote memorization rather than a deep understanding of real-world phenomena. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on disaster mitigation materials toward the preparedness level of 11th-grade students at SMAN 3 Padang Panjang in facing flood and landslide disasters. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, conducted from Mei 11 to June 15, 2026. The sample consisted of class XI F2 as the experimental group (n=36) applying PBL and class XI F7 as the control group (n=32) using conventional methods, selected through purposive sampling with total sampling. Data were collected through pretest, posttest, and a LIPI-UNESCO (2006) standard disaster preparedness questionnaire using a Guttman scale, analyzed using Paired Sample t-Test and Independent Sample t-Test via SPSS. Results showed that the PBL model was significantly more effective in improving students' disaster preparedness. The experimental class average score soared from 42.28 to 87.58, while the control class only increased from 41.44 to 59.59. Based on LIPI-UNESCO classification, 34 out of 36 students in the experimental class achieved the "Highly Prepared" category. The Independent Sample t-Test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), proving a significant difference between the two classes across all preparedness dimensions.
