Abstract

Background: E-cigarette use has increased significantly, especially among adolescents. Knowledge, attitudes, and social environments, such as peer influence and pocket money, play a significant role in adolescents' decisions to try and use e-cigarettes. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, peer influence, and pocket money, and e-cigarette use among SMA/SMK adolescents in Jelutung District, Jambi City, in 2026. Methods: This descriptive analytical study used a cross-sectional design based on primary data through questionnaires. Sampling was conducted using proportionate stratified random sampling. The total sample size was 120 respondents from grades 10 and 11 of SMA/SMK in Jelutung District, Jambi City, in 2026. The data was processed using SPSS software to see univariate analysis based on proportions and frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using the chi square test to see the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Results: The proportion of e-cigarette use among SMA/SMK adolescents in Jelutung was 31.7%. Respondents who used e-cigarette smoking were mostly male (94.7%), aged 16 years (12.5%), Grade 11 students (22.5%) and the reason for using e-cigarettes was due to the influence of friends (20.8%). Three variables were found to be associated with e-cigarette use behavior: attitude (p-value < 0.001, PR = 8.221; 95% CI = 3.110–21.736), peer influence (p-value < 0.001, PR = 4.727; 95% CI = 3.262–6.851), and pocket money (p-value < 0.001, PR = 0.250; 95% CI = 0.119–0.522). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between attitudes, peer influence and the influence of pocket money on e-cigarette smoking behavior in high schools (SMA/SMK) adolescents in Jelutung District, Jambi City in 2026. Therefore, peer-based education efforts are needed regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes, smoking screening and follow-up of screening results through smoking cessation counseling programs and parental supervision of daily pocket money in adolescents.
