Abstract

This study aims to: 1) Determine the effect of the KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) strategy on the reading comprehension ability of Grade IV students at SD Negeri 1 Singkawang; 2) Determine how large the effect of the KWL strategy is on the reading comprehension ability of Grade IV students at SD Negeri 1 Singkawang. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a posttest-only control group design. The research subjects were Grade IV students of SD Negeri 1 Singkawang, consisting of 24 students in the control class and 25 students in the experimental class. The data collection instrument used was a reading comprehension test. Data analysis techniques included the independent sample t-test to determine the effect of the KWL strategy on students' reading comprehension ability, and effect size to determine the magnitude of the effect. The results showed that: 1) The KWL strategy had a significant effect on the reading comprehension ability of Grade IV students at SDN 1 Singkawang, with the experimental class posttest mean (75) higher than the control class (60). The independent sample t-test yielded t = 3.610 with a significance value of <0.001, less than 0.05, thus H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted; 2) The KWL strategy had a very large effect on students' reading comprehension ability, as evidenced by the effect size calculation (Cohen's d = 1.032), which falls in the high category (d > 0.8). The implementation of the KWL strategy reached an average of 91% with a very good category. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for teachers in applying the KWL strategy in the classroom, as well as to enrich research references in the field of Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level.
