Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perception of forest fringe communities regarding the utilization of Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve in Panti District, Pasaman Regency, and to examine the relationship between community perception and participation in conservation. A quantitative descriptive method was employed with 45 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test (Kolmogorov-Smirnov), Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression using SPSS. The novelty of this study lies in its simultaneous examination of both perception and participation dimensions among forest fringe communities in a legally protected nature reserve area, an approach not previously conducted in the Rimbo Panti context. Results show that community perception falls in the "good" category (mean = 4.05) and participation also falls in the "good" category (mean = 3.80). Pearson correlation yields r = 0.365 (p = 0.014), indicating a significant positive relationship. Regression analysis reveals Y = 2.143 + 0.418X with R² = 0.133, meaning perception explains 13.3% of participation variance. Economic empowerment, education, and institutional strengthening remain key factors for improving community participation.
