Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aims to describe the performance of active and passive sentences in expository texts of eighth-grade students at Ma'arif Benjeng Middle School through an analysis of 20 student essays based on Noam Chomsky's Competence-Performance theory. This theory reveals that the use of active sentences is very dominant, especially in transitive and intransitive forms in the thesis section, while the use of passive sentences is still very minimal and lacks variety, indicating a gap between students' theoretical understanding and actual writing practice, which tends to be repetitive and still colored by structural errors in the aspects of affixation and verb diction. Based on these findings, it is concluded that students' language skills are still at a basic level, so a learning strategy that emphasizes the variety of sentence functions is needed so that students are able to produce more objective, formal, and communicative expository texts
