Abstract

Gender equality still needs to be improved through the implementation of boundaries or selfboundaries. This is based on problems found at the elementary school level, where unequal views and treatment between male and female students are still common in the environment, both in the division of roles and in their daily interactions. This study also aims to describe how the implementation of boundaries among elementary school students can become one of the strategies to foster students’ understanding of gender equality. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research involving students and teachers at an elementary school in Yogyakarta as research subjects, using observation and interview techniques. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of boundaries is carried out through the habituation of mutual respect, anti-bullying activities, mindfulness, providing equal opportunities for male and female students, and introducing self-boundaries through visual media, songs, and storytelling. The school also applies equal task distribution and leadership opportunities without distinguishing gender, so that both male and female students have the same opportunities in learning activities and school activities. The implementation of boundaries is considered effective in fostering awareness of gender equality, empathy, and mutual respect among elementary school students.
