Abstract

This study examines the problem of how social presence is constructed within the digital space of a 100-day continuous live streaming event, Marapthon Season 3: The Last Tale, hosted by Indonesian content creator Reza Arap on YouTube. The phenomenon attracted global attention, reaching the top position worldwide in live viewer rankings, yet academic understanding of how audiences experience and construct social presence in such an extreme-duration digital broadcast remains limited. This research aims to describe in depth the essence of audience awareness and meaning-making regarding social presence in the digital world created during the Marapthon live streaming experience. Employing a virtual ethnography approach based on Christine Hine's methodology, this study conducted cyber observation through screen recording and screenshots of the YouTube live chat column, complemented by offline Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with six highly engaged audience participants selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that audience interaction was autonomously formed through adaptive textual and symbolic expressions, including community-specific inside jokes, emoji manipulation as social control instruments, and horizontal communication norms. Social presence manifested multidimensionally through the blurring of creator private space and audience domestic space, fostering parasocial relationships resembling real-world friendships. Furthermore, audiences exercised collective financial agency through the donathon mechanism to control broadcast duration and sustain the virtual third place. Critically, Marapthon reconstructed traditional social gathering practices into an inclusive virtual third place that mitigated modern social isolation, while simultaneously operating within a commodification structure of time and creator capitalism.

Abstract

This study examines the digital discourse surrounding the Kanjuruhan football tragedy as represented in an episode of The Maple Media podcast on YouTube, titled #Rewind With Oki Rengga: Tragedi Kanjuruhan & Sepak Bola Indonesia. The research addresses how the tragedy is discursively constructed in a digital media space that combines a resource person's narrative with audience interaction in the comment section. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies digital discourse analysis across four dimensions, namely text, context, interaction, and ideology/power, together with Berger and Luckmann's social construction of reality theory, which explains meaning-making through externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Data were drawn from the podcast transcript and viewer comments. The findings show that the host externalizes emotional responses, criticism of stakeholders, and social reflection regarding the tragedy; these views are then objectivated into shared understandings of collective responsibility, supporter fanaticism as a risk factor, the federation's central role, and the importance of accountability and transparency. Audience comments demonstrate internalization through agreement with the narrative, adoption of justice-related values, awareness of the need for change, and hope for reform of Indonesian football governance. The study concludes that the podcast functions as a public discursive space that constructs the Kanjuruhan tragedy as a collective, structural, and humanitarian issue, while also revealing an unequal power relation between the public and football institutions that digital media helps renegotiate.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities for late adolescents to engage in self-disclosure, while communication with parents remains essential to their emotional and social development. This study examines how late adolescents engage in self-disclosure during face-to-face communication with their parents. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine late adolescents aged 18–21 years from harmonious families and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings show that self-disclosure is selective, with adolescents more willing to discuss daily activities, academic matters, and friendships than personal feelings, romantic relationships, family conflicts, or future concerns. Self-disclosure was influenced by family culture, gender, personality, dyadic effects, communication media, and discussion topics. Family harmony fosters trust and psychological safety, encouraging adolescents to disclose information according to their comfort and the sensitivity of the topic.
