Abstract

The suicide case of an elementary school student in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) attracts public attention because it not only involves the issue of child suicide but also highlights concerns regarding children's right to education. The incident has received extensive coverage from online news media, with different news outlets presenting diverse perspectives that construct the event in different ways. This study aimed to examine the framing of news coverage on the student suicide case in NTT published by the online news portals Detik.com and Tempo.co. A qualitative approach was employed using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis model, which consists of four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The data consisted of 18 news articles published by Detik.com and Tempo.co concerning the case. The findings showed that Detik.com framed the incident as a consequence of shortcomings in policy implementation and social protection, positioning the government as a responsive actor that sought to address the problem. In contrast, Tempo.co framed the incident as evidence of the state's structural failure to fulfill children's right to education and protect vulnerable groups, thereby emphasizing the need for comprehensive policy reform. The findings indicated that differences in framing were influenced by each media outlet's editorial orientation in selecting, emphasizing, and organizing facts, resulting in different constructions of reality regarding the same event.
