Abstract

This study was motivated by the low communication skills of grade IV students at UPTD SD Negeri 1 Peusangan Selatan, characterized by reluctance to ask questions, answer, discuss, and present work. It aims to examine improvement in students' communication skills, teacher and student activities, and student responses through Problem Based Learning (PBL) on animal life cycle material. A qualitative approach with classroom action research (CAR) was used across two cycles, involving 17 grade IV students. Instruments included end-of-cycle tests, teacher and student activity observation sheets, and response questionnaires. Results show communication skills completion rose from 58.8% (average 75.7) in Cycle I to 88.2% (average 83.5) in Cycle II, surpassing the 70% target. Teacher activity improved from 75.3-81.9% to 98.1-98.8%, while student activity rose from 61.5-66.5% to 81.5-96.3%, both reaching the very good category. Student responses were highly positive, with 86.2% positive acceptance and 99.9% average response success. It is concluded that PBL effectively improves grade IV students' communication skills on animal life cycle material.
