Abstract

This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of the origins and destinations of daily population mobility and to identify the suburban area of Padang City with the highest level of daily mobility intensity using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study employed a quantitative descriptive method with a spatial approach. Data were collected through field observations and records of daily vehicle movements at four observation points located in the suburban areas of Padang City. Data analysis was conducted using GIS through mapping and overlay techniques to identify the spatial patterns of origin–destination movements and the intensity of daily mobility. The results indicate that daily mobility in the suburban areas of Padang City is relatively high and is predominantly characterized by commuter movements. Based on the GIS-based spatial analysis, Lubuk Buaya exhibited the highest mobility intensity, with 13,798 inbound vehicles recorded on Friday. This was followed by Indarung, Bungus, and the ByPass area near the toll road. Traffic volume peaked during the morning and afternoon, corresponding to residents' travel for work, education, trade, and other service-related activities. These findings suggest that the suburban areas of Padang City remain highly dependent on the city center to fulfill daily activities, particularly in the economic sector. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable input for transportation planning and spatially based regional development.
