Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution of cognitive levels of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS), Mid Order Thinking Skills (MOTS), and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the Odd Semester End Summative (SAS) questions for the Indonesian Language subject for grade X at SMA Negeri 1, SMA Negeri 3, and SMA Negeri 6 Tanjungbalai, while also describing students' subjective experiences in solving them. The research approach uses a descriptive qualitative method through content analysis and in-depth interviews with 30 grade X students. The document sample includes 95 questions taken by total sampling. The results show that the assessment instruments in the three schools are still dominated by the LOTS category with an average of 81.8%. In detail, SMAN 1 has the most varied composition (LOTS 68.6%, MOTS 5.7%, HOTS 25.7%), SMAN 6 has a 20% HOTS portion limited to the C4 level, while the questions at SMAN 3 are entirely at the LOTS level (100%). Interview findings indicate that students can work on LOTS questions easily and quickly. In contrast, HOTS questions require a longer cognitive accommodation process because students must interpret implied meanings and face the additional cognitive burden of unfamiliar archaic vocabulary in classical Malay hikayat texts.
