Abstract

This study aims to develop and test the feasibility and practicality of a module titled “Letters to the Earth” based on environmental literacy and to assess its effectiveness in improving third-grade elementary school students’ letter-writing skills. This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, which comprises the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research subjects consisted of subject matter experts, media experts, language experts, teachers, and 25 third-grade students at Seluma Public Elementary School No. 108. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and letter-writing tests (pretest-posttest). The data were analyzed using feasibility percentages and Normalized Gain (N-Gain). The results of the study indicate that the module was rated as “highly feasible,” with an average expert validation score of 94.76%. The module’s practicality, as assessed by teacher responses, reached 95.5%, and by student responses, 93.5%. Students’ letter-writing skills improved from an average of 68.4 on the pretest to 86.7 on the posttest, with an N-Gain value of 0.58, which falls into the moderate category. Thus, the “Letter to the Earth” module can be used as an alternative teaching material for Indonesian language in elementary schools that integrates writing skills with environmental literacy in a contextual manner.
