Abstract

One way to increase electric vehicle (EV) battery utilization is to connect it to a dc microgrid. The EV battery can assume the role of an energy storage from the grid point of view. A bidirectional DC-DC converter will be needed to transfer power between them back and forth. This paper proposes the converter design considering its functional objective, including interleaved phase number determination. Efficiency performance evaluation is presented by power loss analysis with the parasitic-parameters consideration of the components. Finding optimum switching frequency based on power loss analysis is performed independently between input and output sides of the converter. Finally, experiments using a scaled-down prototype are shown to verify the analytical analysis of the converter. The experimental results properly validate the power loss analytic analysis carried out in this paper with a maximum error of 2.04% at 1131-watt, 60 V battery voltage, and 140 V grid voltage. Maximum efficiency 96.97% is obtained at 301-watt, 130 V battery voltage, and 151 V grid voltage. Overall, the converter has a simple structure, capable to be operated in various levels of input and output voltages with a minimum battery side current ripple.

Abstract

Voltage source inverter has been applied for uninterruptible power supply (UPS), renewable energy sources, and motor drive. The popular modulations for inverters are sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), zero sequence signal modulation (ZSS), space vector modulation (SVM), and discontinuous PWM (DPWM). All these modulations have been applied to three-phase and multiphase inverters. The characteristics of the modulation application in these inverters have been well investigated. However, only SPWM has been applied satisfactorily in single-phase inverter. From the literature, the applications of ZSS and DPWM couldn’t show any benefit. In this paper, a DPWM is proposed for single-phase inverter. The output current ripple is analyzed and experiments are conducted to verify the analytical result. Comparison to SPWM is conducted to find the modulation index range that provides a benefit when using the DPWM.

Abstract

This paper compares the magnetic, electrical, and mechanical characteristics of two permanent magnet generator topologies: single-gap axial flux and single-gap inner rotor radial flux. The study aims to identify how the key parameters fluctuate at each power capacity and investigate the trends in their values as power changes. The power capacities observed are 300 W, 600 W, 900 W, 1200 W, and 1500 W. Simulations used with the help of Ansys Maxwell software to obtain: i) magnetic characteristics without load, including air gap flux density, flux linkage, and induced voltage, ii) electrical performance, consisting of armature current, terminal voltage, voltage regulation, total harmonic distortion, core loss and output power, and iii) mechanical performance, including shaft torque and cogging torque. The last step compares the power density of both topologies. The simulation results show that the axial flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMG) has better air gap flux density, voltage regulation, total harmonic distortion (THD), efficiency, electromagnetic torque, and power density characteristics. Meanwhile, the radial flux permanent magnet generator (RFPMG) is superior in induced voltage and output power. These results conclude that, in general, AFPMG is exceptional from a technical point of view and is more economical when applied to hydro or wind energy systems.

Abstract

This paper introduces small signal modeling of the restructured boost converter (RBC) in continuous conduction mode (CCM) by using the circuit averaging technique. The averaging technique produces linear transfer functions of the converter. The transfer functions relating the duty cycle to output voltage, duty cycle to inductor current, input voltage to output voltage, and input voltage to inductor current are obtained. To validate the converter model, power simulation (PSIM) simulations are developed, and experiments are conducted. The function of RBC is similar to a conventional boost converter, i.e., to level up the input voltage. A comparative analysis between the RBC and conventional boost converter is performed. The results highlight the advantages of RBC over a conventional boost converter.
