Abstract

This study examines cultural tolerance and interfaith dynamics between Muslim and Hindu communities in Karang Tapen, Cakranegara, as a localised reflection of broader inter-religious relations on Lombok Island. The research focuses on how tolerance is formed, negotiated, and sustained in the context of everyday social interactions. Using a literature-based approach supported by contextual and socio-historical analysis, the study examines potential sources of tension, including differing agendas, needs, knowledge systems, and socio-religious motivations, between the predominantly Muslim Sasak and predominantly Hindu Balinese communities. The findings reveal that interfaith relations in Karang Tapen are fluid and cyclical, characterised by periods of cooperation, adaptation, and reconciliation, as well as moments of misunderstanding and latent tension. Historical legacies shape these dynamics, shared economic activities, political considerations, and deeply rooted cultural traditions that both bridge and divide the groups. Importantly, cultural tolerance here is not simply the absence of conflict but an active and ongoing process of negotiation that requires mutual respect, shared cultural spaces, and inclusive dialogue. By highlighting these patterns, this study offers insights into sustaining harmony and fostering resilience in multi-religious and multi-ethnic settings.
