Abstract

Culture constitutes a fundamental aspect of human life, evolving over centuries and distinguishing each ethnic group through unique cultural, religious, and social characteristics. In Central Lombok, particularly in Pejanggik Village, traditions grounded in ancestral wisdom have shaped the development of the Perang Timbung tradition. This study investigates the historical significance of the Perang Timbung tradition as a cultural practice in Pejanggik Village. The primary objective is to analyze the symbolic meanings embedded within the Perang Timbung tradition among the Sasak community and to examine the expression of solidarity within this practice. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, the research utilizes key, primary, and supporting data sources. Data collection methods include observation, interviews, and documentation, with analysis conducted through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Fieldwork findings reveal that the ritual stages of Perang Timbung comprise three phases: (1) preparation, involving deliberation and equipment preparation; (2) implementation, which includes the sacred water ritual, recitation of "berjanzi" (traditional prayer), chanting, and collective prayer and zikr (remembrance of God); and (3) closure, consisting of face washing (seraup), application of a forehead mark (sesembek), and the symbolic act of throwing Timbung. These rituals possess profound symbolic significance, as detailed in the study, and underscore the solidarity values inherent in the Perang Timbung tradition.
