Abstract

Marriages between aristocratic women and commoners in Suradadi Village, Terara Subdistrict, East Lombok Regency, are regulated by strict Sasak customs. Aristocratic women are required to marry partners of equal social status; otherwise, they risk losing inheritance rights and expulsion from the aristocratic group. Conversely, aristocratic men may marry women from either aristocratic or commoner backgrounds. This study investigates the customs and consequences associated with marriages between aristocratic women and commoners in the village. A qualitative exploratory methodology was utilized, with data gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation. Participants included the village head, community leaders, youth leaders, and local residents. The findings indicate two primary consequences: first, children born to aristocratic women who marry commoners assume their father's social status and forfeit aristocratic titles; second, inheritance from the aristocratic family is lost if a woman marries a commoner. These results offer insight into the influence of Sasak customs on social status and inheritance rights within the community.
