Abstract

This community engagement study developed an environmental sensor-based automated greenhouse roof system for a community-based agricultural tourism site in Mojokerto Regency, East Java, Indonesia. An applied engineering design method combined with a participatory design approach was used through five stages: existing-condition assessment, partner requirement analysis, conceptual design, detailed mechanical and control-system design, and design validation. The resulting system integrates environmental sensing, control, and mechanical actuation subsystems. Temperature and rainfall were selected as the principal environmental inputs, while a controller determines three operational responses: opening, closing, or maintaining the roof position. Mechanical movement is generated by a linear actuator connected to the roof panel through a linkage and pivot mechanism. The design emphasizes operational simplicity, mechanical safety, maintainability, accessibility of components, and suitability for educational demonstration. Stakeholder involvement ensured that technical specifications reflected actual operational needs and the greenhouse's dual productive-educational function. The validated design provides a technical basis for subsequent fabrication, installation, calibration, and field-performance testing. The study indicates that context-appropriate greenhouse automation can support both protected cultivation and technology-based learning in community agricultural tourism while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity.
