Abstract

The study addresses anomalies in insulator leakage current caused by corrosion, cracking, weather exposure, and salt spray pollution in coastal transmission lines. These issues were identified during the annual maintenance of the Sanur–Pesanggaran 150 kV transmission line at Tower 1 Pole 53. Additional contributing factors include the insulators’ service life of 25–30 years and inadequate cleaning maintenance. Such conditions increase the risk of flashover and insulator failure, reducing transmission system reliability. This research evaluates the feasibility of glass insulators equipped with a zinc sleeve layer to improve corrosion resistance, reduce leakage current, and extend service life in coastal environments. The methodology involved determining the insulator model, analyzing PLN inspection reports (2023), collecting installed insulator data, measuring leakage current, and assessing post-test conditions. The study examined 83 towers along the Pesanggaran–Sanur 1 transmission line. Results indicate that the insulator at Pole 53 failed to meet the required standard, whereas zinc sleeve-coated insulators on other poles complied with IEC 60815:2021 based on leakage current test results.
