Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of perceived social support on academic stress among active undergraduate students in Indonesia. The urgency of this research is driven by the high prevalence of academic stress resulting from complex curriculum demands, which often negatively impacts students' mental health. This research applied a quantitative approach using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected from 1,062 active university students across Indonesia utilizing the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA). Data were analyzed using simple linear regression analysis to test the relationship between variables. The results indicated that there was a significant negative effect of perceived social support on academic stress. However, the contribution of this effect was remarkably small, accounting for only 1.6% (). These findings imply that social support is not the primary determinant of students' academic stress, but rather a limited buffer. Consequently, internal factors such as independent learning and systematic workload management play a more dominant role in determining academic stress levels. Higher education institutions are advised to strengthen the academic advisors' role in providing structured technical support and learning strategies.
