Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways and remains an important health problem among children. Children with bronchial asthma may experience varying degrees of pulmonary function impairment. Imbalances in nutritional status, including undernutrition and obesity, may affect respiratory function through systemic inflammatory mechanisms and alterations in chest wall and pulmonary mechanics. Puspose: To analyze the relationship between nutritional status and pulmonary function among pediatric patients with bronchial asthma at Bintang Amin Hospital in 2025. Method: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 46 pediatric patients with bronchial asthma aged 11–16 years who were selected using purposive sampling based on medical records from 2025. Nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI), while pulmonary function was evaluated based on the percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) obtained from spirometry examination. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with Spearman’s rho correlation test. Results: Most respondents were 11 years old (28.3%), female (60.9%), had undernutrition (56.5%), and experienced moderate obstructive pulmonary impairment (54.3%). Bivariate analysis showed a correlation coefficient of 0.122 with a p-value of 0.420 (p > 0.05), indicating no statistically significant relationship between nutritional status and pulmonary function. Conclusion: No statistically significant relationship was found between nutritional status and pulmonary function among pediatric patients with bronchial asthma at Bintang Amin Hospital in 2025. Variations in pulmonary function may be more strongly associated with clinical and environmental factors, such as asthma control, treatment adherence, and exposure to environmental allergens.
