Abstract

Suboptimal nutritional status can disrupt movement efficiency and reduce cardiorespiratory endurance in athletes, potentially hindering performance during training and competition. This study aims to analyze the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and cardiorespiratory endurance (vo₂max) among athletes of the Bivota Karawang Volleyball Club. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 35 athletes (aged 15–17 years) selected through purposive sampling. BMI was measured by comparing body weight (kg) and height squared (m²), while endurance was assessed using the Multistage Fitness Test (MFT). Data analysis was performed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed that the majority of athletes had normal BMI (37%), followed by underweight (26%), overweight (23%), and obesity (14%). The endurance levels of athletes were predominantly in the moderate (34%) and good (29%) categories. The correlation test yielded a value of r = -0.996 with p = 0.000, indicating a very significant negative relationship between BMI and endurance. In conclusion, the higher the BMI value, the lower the cardiorespiratory endurance level of athletes. Therefore, regular monitoring of nutritional status, along with appropriate training programs and nutritional intake management, is essential to improve endurance and performance in volleyball athletes.

Abstract

Football is a sport involving complex movement demands that may increase the risk of injury, particularly among young athletes who are still undergoing physical and biomechanical development. Goalkeepers have unique movement characteristics, including jumping, landing, lateral movement, changes of direction, and diving, which require optimal movement quality and foot function. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between functional movement quality and flat foot with a history of lower-extremity injuries among young goalkeepers. Functional movement quality was assessed using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), while flat foot was evaluated based on the characteristics of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. A history of lower-extremity injury was used as an outcome variable to describe previous injury experiences among the athletes. This study employed a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design. Relationship analysis was conducted to examine the association between functional movement quality, flat foot, and a history of lower-extremity injuries. Conceptually, poor movement quality and altered foot structure may affect neuromuscular control, balance, stability, and lower-extremity biomechanics, which may be associated with injury occurrence. This study is expected to provide information regarding functional and biomechanical factors that should be considered in injury screening and prevention programs for young goalkeepers.
