Abstract

Road damage caused by vehicle overloading is an increasingly frequent issue accompanying the rise in transportation and goods distribution activities. Vehicle loads exceeding design capacity increase stress and strain within the pavement structure, thereby accelerating deterioration and reducing service life. This study aims to analyze the response of a flexible pavement structure to overload using the mechanistic-empirical method—facilitated by the KENPAVE program—and to estimate service life based on fatigue cracking and rutting criteria. Analysis results indicate a surface deflection of 0.05005 mm, which remains below the 2.0 mm maximum limit. The horizontal tensile strain at a depth of 15 cm is 179.0 microstrain—below the 200 microstrain limit—suggesting a relatively low risk of fatigue cracking. Conversely, vertical compressive strains of 569.2 microstrain (at a depth of 25 cm) and 313.9 microstrain (at a depth of 55.03 mm) exceed the 200 microstrain limit, indicating a potential for rutting. Vertical compressive stress at the subgrade surface reaches 850 kPa, exceeding the 100 kPa limit. The estimated service life is 2.5–5.2 years, far below the 20-year design life specified in the MDPJ 2024 standards. These findings demonstrate the significant impact of overloading on pavement performance. Keywords: flexible pavement, Kenpave program, MDPJ Bina Marga 2017, road damage, service life.
