Abstract

This research is motivated by the low numeracy ability of fourth grade students of Gadang 02 Malang Elementary School on the area and volume of shapes, which is shown from the pre-cycle results with a completion percentage of only 37.04% and a class average score of 61.67. The main cause of this problem is the dominance of the lecture method which has not accommodated the diversity of student learning styles. This research aims to improve students' numeracy ability through the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model based on differentiated learning. The method used is the Classroom Action Research (CAR) model Kemmis & McTaggart which was carried out in two cycles, with 27 fourth grade students as research subjects. Data were collected through written tests and observation sheets. The results of the study showed a significant increase in each cycle: the average class score increased from 61.67 (pre-cycle) to 70.18 (Cycle I) and 77.40 (Cycle II), while the percentage of completion increased from 37.04% to 48.15% and 66.67%. Thus, the PBL model based on differentiated learning is proven to be effective in improving the mathematical numeracy skills of fourth-grade elementary school students on the area and volume of shapes.
