Abstract

This study aims to describe how Guidance and Counseling (GC) services are implemented at SMPN 1 Telukjambe Timur and to explore students’ understanding of their benefits. The results show that although GC services are available, their effectiveness is still limited. Programs such as individual counseling, classroom guidance, and learning support have not been carried out consistently, so their impact is not evenly felt by all students. Many students still view GC as merely a place to report problems, even though its role includes developing students’ potential, helping emotional regulation, and supporting academic and future planning. From the counselor’s perspective, several challenges arise, including limited time, a large number of students, and suboptimal coordination with homeroom teachers and subject teachers. These issues lead to less systematic follow-up and services that do not reach all students. Nevertheless, positive developments are seen through informal activities such as small-group mentoring and religious programs that help build closer relationships between GC teachers and students. Overall, the study highlights the need for more continuous programs, better student understanding of GC functions, and stronger collaboration among school personnel to improve the effectiveness of GC services.
