Abstract

The scarcity and increasing cost of conventional pamor materials have encouraged the exploration of alternative materials for keris production. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing discarded chainsaw bars as an alternative pamor material by evaluating product quality and production cost efficiency. The research employed a mixed-method approach combining experimental and case study designs. Experimental testing was conducted to assess forge-welding performance, structural integrity, and visual characteristics of the resulting pamor, while Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) was used to evaluate economic efficiency. The findings demonstrate that used chainsaw bars possess suitable metallurgical properties for traditional forge-welding, producing clear pamor patterns, strong interlayer bonding, and stable blade structures comparable to those made with conventional materials. In addition, the use of recycled chainsaw bars reduced production costs by approximately 20.4% – 72.1%, while supporting resource conservation and circular economy principles. The study concludes that discarded chainsaw bars represent a technically feasible, economically efficient, and sustainable alternative material for keris pamor without compromising its aesthetic quality, structural performance, or cultural values.
