Abstract

The rapid expansion of modern retail formats such as minimarkets potentially threatens the survival of traditional grocery stores (toko kelontong), including in Wai Mhorock Village, Abepura District, Jayapura City, which hosts 123 toko kelontong alongside six Indomaret and Alfamidi outlets. This study analyzes the spatial distribution pattern of minimarkets and their impact on the income and customer volume of nearby toko kelontong. A mixed-methods case study design was applied, combining spatial analysis (Nearest Neighbour Analysis, buffer, kernel density, and road network analysis) in ArcGIS 10.8 with in-depth interviews of six toko kelontong owners located within a 100-meter radius of minimarkets. The nearest neighbour ratio (R) was 1.97 (z = 4.55; p < 0.001), indicating a regularly dispersed distribution pattern of minimarkets along high-accessibility arterial and collector roads. Toko kelontong within the 100-meter buffer experienced daily income declines of up to 66.7%, from Rp2,000,000-Rp6,000,000 to ≤Rp900,000-Rp2,000,000 per day, while stores with extended operating hours (up to 24 hours) were relatively able to sustain their income. Toko kelontong owners responded through adaptive strategies such as operating BRI Link agents, selling mobile credit, adopting self-service layouts, and accepting QRIS payments. These findings reinforce the relevance of Central Place Theory and competitive strategy theory in local-scale retail contexts and provide a basis for minimarket zoning policy recommendations for local government.
