Abstract

This research is motivated by the vulnerability of food security in coastal communities in small island areas, which are affected by limited access to distribution, environmental conditions, and dependence on marine resources. This study aims to analyze the food security strategies of the Batulawang Hamlet community on Kemujan Island, Karimunjawa District, and to identify factors that influence their sustainability. The study used a qualitative approach with a comparative descriptive design, involving coastal communities, fishermen, seaweed farmers, collectors, and traders as research subjects. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation studies with interview guides as the main instrument. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the food security of the Batulawang community relies on the utilization of marine commodities such as squid and seaweed, which are sold to meet staple food needs, with a distribution system through sea routes and local stalls as the main nodes. The main challenges include extreme weather, limited fuel, and inadequate infrastructure, which encourage the community to implement adaptation strategies such as livelihood diversification and utilization of local resources. This study concludes that food security in remote coastal areas results from the interaction among ecological conditions, local economic systems, and logistical access, and that policy strengthening should focus on improving distribution infrastructure, ensuring energy supply stability, and supporting the local economy.
