Abstract

Initially, the Bregada served as a palace guard force, then adapted to become a security force for palace ceremonial events. Meanwhile, in the last 1-2 decades, dozens to hundreds of folk breagada groups have emerged, playing a significant role in cultural and ceremonial events in Yogyakarta. The emergence of these folk breagada is interesting in relation to the relationship between the people and the Yogyakarta Palace. However, Yogyakarta society continues to experience social change. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Bregada Culture in Society as a Form of the Existence of the Yogyakarta Palace in the Modern Era. The research subjects consisted of residents in villages with folk bregadas, bregada practitioners, community leaders, and academics. The method used in this study was a mixed method. Qualitative data included interviews and literature reviews, while quantitative data included questionnaires administered via purposive sampling. The results of the study indicate that the Bregada culture is a form of the Yogyakarta Palace's presence in society in the modern era, thereby strengthening the palace's presence in Yogyakarta. Furthermore, the people's brigade can strengthen the palace's existence amidst the era of modernization and the increasingly egalitarian culture, both in societies historically characterized by close ties and in modern, horizontal societies. The implications of this research can inform the Yogyakarta Sultanate about how to develop harmonious relationships within its communities, both now and in the future.
